Parent urges Mars Area SD board to require transparency in coach hiring; board points to administration

"Please make sure we are all participating in this process," McAfee said. "None of those practices that I just listed will help our programs move forward or coach retention or program growth." She urged the district to provide resumes, share applicant lists and consult former athletes and team captains when making hiring decisions.
Board members responded that hiring and day-to-day personnel decisions are handled by paid district staff. "That's not our job," one board member said, adding that trustees are volunteers who rely on administration to vet candidates and manage staff. Dr. McMahon reiterated that the board's role is oversight: "I trust him and pay him a lot of money to make sure his staff is doing his job."
McAfee said a candidate she knows is expected to attend next week's meeting when the board considers that hire. Board members agreed to place athletic-hiring items on the appropriate upcoming agenda and encouraged parents to continue providing input.
The board did not take formal action on hiring policies at the meeting; personnel consent items were approved as part of the agenda’s routine approvals.
