Parkway enrollment surge strains CTE capacity, board hears

Parkway staff updated the Keystone Oaks School Board on sharp enrollment and program growth and warned that some Career & Technical Education spaces are near capacity.
Ms. Shaw, representing Parkway, said the summer camp drew roughly 600 students this year — up from about 200 four or five years ago — and that overall Parkway enrollment is about 1,410 students, an increase of about 93 from last year and roughly 831 from 10 years ago. Board members described that growth as a “good problem to have” but raised safety and space concerns in hands‑on programs such as welding and culinary operations.
Administrators said an architects' feasibility study for an additional facility or campus options has been completed and is currently in committee. They noted any plan involving district partnerships or use of a nearby technical college would require agreement by the 12‑district consortium; the superintendent emphasized that such a decision would need unanimous approval by the member boards.
Board members and administrators discussed interim steps: potential program rotation so students concentrate on a pathway across grade levels, renovations to a second building, and making space or scheduling changes to protect safety in shop areas. Administration invited board members to visit Parkway during regular program hours to see classes in operation and said more detailed recommendations and renovation options will be provided at a future meeting.
The board scheduled its October meeting to be held at Parkway and said directions will be circulated to members.
