The Kutztown Area School District board approved a grant partnership with Merlin Mind and the Pennsylvania Department of Education to provide teachers with a microphone‑style device intended to let teachers invoke resources hands‑free and save instructional time.
During discussion district leaders described the product as optional and efficiency‑focused. "It's really about efficiency and allowing teachers to move around the room," the superintendent said, adding that the district expects teacher choice in early stages.
Board members and at least one trustee raised questions about data collection and the product’s AI capabilities. "I looked at some of the online content describing it. It seemed like it could be more comprehensive… If it is creating content in the AI sense because it's a language modeler AI, that's a concern," a trustee said.
Administration said Merlin Mind will collect command and text usage data to refine the product and that the device is not always ‘‘listening’’ — the teacher pushes a button to activate it. "They do collect data… it is text based," the superintendent said, adding that the district will work with vendor safeguards and teacher feedback before wider adoption.
Board members also asked about the five‑year term of the grant and long‑term costs if the district accepts the technology beyond the grant term. Administration said the district does not yet know costs after the grant and will monitor teacher uptake and evaluate whether the technology becomes built into devices over time.
Trustees voted to accept the PDE‑partnered grant; several asked for follow‑up reports on pilot use, data handling practices and teacher feedback prior to any wider roll‑out.
