Committee moves federal fiscal-compliance policy to full board; discusses ninth-grade tech exploratory idea

Committee staff presented a revised federal fiscal-compliance policy during the Nov. 10 Policy & Curriculum Committee meeting and said the draft aligns district terminology to federal regulations and adds provisions on audit thresholds, record-retention, cybersecurity and whistleblower protections.

"This is a federal based policy, so we don't have very much leeway as far as adaptations of what we can do to it," a staff member said, summarizing why the document is largely compliance-driven. Committee members agreed the policy is compliance-focused and generally administrative in nature.

After discussion, committee members moved the policy to the full board for first reading on June 26. A committee member called for the motion and the committee approved by voice vote; multiple members answered "Aye." The committee chair confirmed the item will be forwarded to the full board.

The meeting also included a separate discussion about vocational pathways and the regional tech school. Chair Wissner raised a conceptual idea that, given increasing demand for trade programs at the tech school, the district could explore offering a ninth-grade exploratory program at the high school to prepare students for career-technical enrollment.

Dr. Myers and other members said the idea merits further study to determine schedule impacts, staffing needs and how an exploratory ninth-grade offering might feed into the regional tech center. Dr. Myers called it a timely concept and suggested staff take the idea back to task teams for feasibility work.

Next steps: The fiscal-compliance policy will be forwarded to the full board for first reading on June 26; staff will explore the feasibility of a ninth-grade exploratory tech offering and report back to the committee.
