Facilities staff told the Facilities & Extracurricular committee that recurring peeling and finish failures on the high‑school gym floor require a full sand-and-refinish rather than a simple screening coat. Multiple vendors inspected the floor and disagreed on cause: Miller Sports Authority suggested too many finish coats, while other contractors cited poor surface preparation. Facilities staff recommended Chambers Flooring based on references and the company’s practice of having the estimator perform the work.
Staff presented a Chambers Flooring quote of $30,995 to sand the floor to bare wood, repaint game lines and apply a new finish. "We have three other companies that say you need to sand it down, as well as Miller saying, hey, you gotta do it," a facilities staff member said; staff recommended Chambers because the vendor can begin immediately after the school year and provides district references.
The committee moved to forward the Chambers Flooring information and recommendation to the full board; a voice vote carried the motion. Facilities staff also discussed middle-school work and an in‑house screening experiment for the middle-school floor, and noted the district must enforce 'no tape on the floor' practices to protect the new finish.
Separately, committee members debated weight‑room access for students, including making the facility available during the 'connections' period for students in good academic standing, possible coach supervision or a stipend for a lifting coach, and pilot scheduling to avoid conflict with team workouts. Staff said they will coordinate details with high‑school administration and athletics before implementing a pilot schedule.
