Committee votes to send revision eliminating one‑month early kindergarten admission to full board

The Policy & Curriculum Committee voted to send a proposed revision to the district’s admission policy to the full board that would eliminate the current one‑month early‑admission exception (children who turn five by Oct. 1 but are not five by Sept. 1).

Staff described the existing early‑admission process: families petition the district, the student receives a norm‑referenced psychoeducational evaluation administered or organized by the district psychologist, and a panel reviews results and makes a recommendation. Staff said the district has received about 20 early‑admission applications since 2016–17 and has approved six total; three approvals occurred in the most recent year. "We've had 20 applicants since 2016,'17 — it will average 2," an Administrator said when summarizing historical numbers.

Committee members raised concerns about the workload on the school psychologist, the small number of students affected, and the social‑emotional risks of admitting very young kindergarteners. One committee member recommended retaining the September 1 cutoff to avoid pressuring younger children into classroom environments before they are socially ready. Another member suggested delaying implementation if the board approves so families already planning under the current policy would not be disadvantaged.

After discussion, the committee approved a motion to forward a revision that would eliminate the one‑month early‑admission exception (establishing a Sept. 1 cutoff) to the full board for first reading. Staff noted the full-board process requires two readings and that final language could be refined at that stage. The committee did not adopt a final text at the committee meeting; staff will supply a formal draft for first reading at the full-board meeting.
