Board approves interactive alumni hall of fame after debate over cost and sponsorships

The Jenkintown School District board voted to approve an interactive digital alumni hall-of-fame display after a lengthy discussion about cost, placement and sponsorships.

Administrators described the display as a way to replace static plaques, host video and photo content, add QR codes for donations and sponsorships, and highlight alumni and facilities. Staff said the district could purchase a single-year license to start and pursue donations to offset costs, and that the digital monitor was being offered at a reduced price during a limited promotion.

Board members questioned the timing and the funding source. One board member noted the district’s capital constraints and suggested a commitment that at least half the initial cost be covered by sponsorships or JEF donations; others worried that a contingent approval could prevent the vendor from ordering materials. Staff and trustees discussed estimates including a discounted screen price cited in meeting materials as $2,800 and a listed larger-screen price of $4,096, and noted the district would aim to seek sponsors and JEF support to reduce local-taxpayer impact.

The board voted to approve the one-year digital purchase and pursue sponsorships and donations to offset costs; the motion was declared passed in the meeting and members asked for an update at the next board meeting. The superintendent and trustees emphasized starting with a single-year license and revisiting multiyear options if donations materialize.

The vote authorized the project while noting both the district’s interest in honoring alumni and the need to balance costs against other priorities.
