Jenkintown SD board discusses seasonal game manager role and athletic-event safety

Board members and staff discussed a proposed seasonal, not team-based, game manager position to assist the athletic director with event logistics and crowd control for winter athletics. Administrators described the role as seasonal (trial for winter, possibly extended to fall if successful) and intended first to be offered to teachers before opening publicly.

Questions from trustees focused on emergency procedures and the job's scope: the board asked for clearer language about when a game manager should stabilize an injured person, involve the district athletic trainer and when 911 should be called. A staff member offered to fix a typo and add explicit direction that the game manager's role is to "assist the athletic trainer" and that the trainer retains primary medical responsibility. One board member suggested the job description describe the game manager as a "co-pilot" who follows athletic-trainer direction.

Trustees also reported that the borough and school board have signed a contract to provide a police officer at all home basketball games; administrators said they are monitoring safety at night events and have improved spectator signage. The board agreed to pilot the seasonal game manager position in the winter and revisit the program after the season.

The board did not vote separately to create a standing position during the discussion; personnel matters tied to the winter-season pilot and the hire recommended for January were included in the personnel items that the board later approved.
