Jenkintown board approves consent agenda and personnel items; public asks about superintendent leave and facility rentals

The Jenkintown School District board approved a series of routine agenda items and personnel actions during its Oct. 20 business meeting and heard public comment raising questions about the superintendent's paid leave and revenue from rentals of school facilities.
Chair (speaker 2) called for motions on consent and personnel items; motions were made, seconded and the chair announced the items passed. "Motion passes," the chair said after votes on multiple grouped items.
Votes at a glance: Items approved by the board included minutes for items 3.1–3.3; consent agenda items 4.1–4.15 (which the board discussed, including a short-term proposal for tennis-court crack repairs); agreements and staffing items 5.1–5.3 (a pivot from a candidate at ASPS to an engagement with GHR to avoid service interruptions); routine items 7.1–7.4; personnel items 8.1–8.4 including a memorandum of understanding with the JEA and an aftercare position; and a second reading and adoption of a revised policy.
During discussion of the facilities agenda the board and staff discussed a proposed two-part epoxy repair for wide cracks between and under tennis-court nets as a short-term, approximate two-year solution to buy time for a longer-term plan. Staff noted that cure time depends on weather and that courts would be closed for a day or two while repairs cure. Board members questioned whether winter conditions or expansion/contraction would affect durability; staff characterized the work as a temporary measure to preserve safety for spring play.
Public comment: A resident who identified themselves during public comment thanked Legacy Park volunteers and then asked pointed questions about district personnel and facility rentals. "We're worrying about state budget shortfalls while we continue to pay some $150,000 a year to not work," the commenter said, asking for clarity on the superintendent’s leave arrangements and whether the district had communicated about the leave. The commenter also asked how much JYA (rental of courts) charges and whether the district profits from charging local groups.
Board reply and next steps: The chair responded that the district is interviewing search firms for a superintendent search and "we hope to have...in November, we'll have a search firm identified," and that confidential personnel items limit the board's public comment on the superintendent matter. The board invited JYA representatives to make a proposal about facility use if they wish and said the district would follow up on rental figures.
Other business: Board members discussed after-school clubs and the Reading Olympics, noting past practice of holding Reading Olympics activities during school recess and exploring hybrid scheduling; staff and liaisons reported on countywide legislative issues, IU programs, mental-health grants and upcoming events.
The board adjourned to executive session for confidential personnel matters.
