Jenkintown board leans toward pre‑Labor Day school start; formal calendar to be voted in January

The Jenkintown School District board discussed whether to start the 2026–27 school year before or after Labor Day and signaled support for an earlier start date while asking administrators to return with a formal calendar for a January vote.

Administrators reported roughly a dozen responses to a calendar survey that were split between preferences to start before Labor Day and to start after. "If you're saying we're starting before Labor Day, we're starting on Monday, August 31," the administrator said, framing the practical calendar dates under consideration.

Why it matters: The choice affects families’ travel plans, coordination with the Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (which has its own calendar), and athletic scheduling. Administrators noted that many neighboring districts begin before Labor Day, and starting earlier can provide about four additional instructional days.

Concerns and considerations: Trustees raised questions about impacts on spring sports scheduling, whether third‑party partners (like Eastern) would be affected and whether construction timetables—particularly the Legacy Park work—would be compatible with an earlier opening. The district said construction is planned to begin well before school starts and that timing should be manageable.

Next steps: The board asked staff to prepare calendar options (including a multi‑year calendar possibility), do additional outreach and present a formal calendar for approval at the January meeting. The board did not take a final vote on the calendar at the Dec. 15 meeting.
