Substitute Superintendent (speaker identified as Substitute superintendent) said the district surveyed students in person to capture accurate interest counts and reported sport-specific projections: high interest in girls tennis (32 students) that could exceed facility capacity (four courts), robust early interest in girls field hockey and cross country, and 23 students expressing interest in varsity football (down from 27 the prior year) with only 17 middle-school players indicating interest for the coming year. The Substitute superintendent noted games were forfeited last year after low rosters and said injuries and attrition are significant drivers of diminished participation.
Board members and staff discussed possible responses: adjusting roster sizes, encouraging student interest through outreach, exploring alternate formats (8v8 or flag football), and considering the PIAA eligibility rule that allows only four years of varsity competition (which limits allowing eighth graders to play varsity without affecting senior-year eligibility). A board member urged careful communication with families, noting that cuts or roster reductions can feel personal and require clear explanation and transition plans for affected students.
Staff said the next steps will include convening coaches, students and families to confirm interest, vetting options for competition format and travel, and bringing recommendations on scheduling, coach recruitment and safety protocols back to the board before final roster decisions are made.
