Hempfield Athletic Hall of Fame holds 20th annual induction ceremony

Charlie Maris opened the twentieth annual Black Knight Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony, welcoming inductees, committee members, families and friends and recognizing committee contributors including Jim Albright and Jeff Bradley. Karen Hall, speaking for the Hempfield School District, framed the event as a celebration of two decades of athletic achievements and the perseverance and teamwork of athletes, coaches and contributors. Ryan Landis, the athletic director, described upcoming facility improvements at Hempfield High School and said the district plans a digital Hall of Fame display to preserve inductees’ legacies.

Presenters introduced individual inductees and teams, with brief biographies and highlights: Jude Bervinchek (wrestling coach) was noted for a 25-year coaching career with 277 wins and multiple league and district titles; Don Forrey (class of 1970) was praised for multi-sport success and contributions to county championships; Sarah Helkason (class of 2014) was commended for record-setting performances in track and field and field hockey; Jordan Kolb (class of 2005) and Sean Sangri (class of 2008) were introduced for leadership and state-level accomplishments; the 1998–99 boys basketball team and the 2007 girls tennis team were inducted with speakers recalling season highlights and coaching staff contributions. Several inductees and team representatives offered brief acceptance remarks, thanking family, coaches and teammates.

Organizers asked teams to gather in the lobby after the ceremony for photographs and noted logistics for missing plaques and contact information for follow-up.
