Board approves Franklin Township windows; principal explains course selection changes and confirms financial literacy requirement

The Gettysburg Area School District board approved a Franklin Township elementary school window-replacement project and heard updates on curriculum and the calendar from administrators.

On a motion and roll-call vote the board approved the Franklin Township window replacement. The vote carried with recorded yes votes from the board.

Principal Lusk answered a board member’s question about the high school course selection guide, saying the guide was intentionally streamlined with few changes and that the district has longstanding partnerships with Harrisburg Area Community College, Carlow University and Harrisburg University for college-in-high-school offerings. "We've partnered with Harrisburg Area Community College for a long, long time," Principal Lusk said, noting some generalization in guide language to allow flexibility as partner institutions change.

The board also confirmed that a financial literacy course is required for graduation at the district level and that it will become a state requirement next year. Principal Lusk said the district has required the course "for a number of years now, actually, since I've been here. A decade plus." Administrator Jason reported calendar items, a district rapid-notification test and that PDE approved five flexible instructional days for weather-related remote instruction.

Why it matters: the facilities vote authorizes work affecting student learning spaces; course guide and calendar changes affect students and families. The board did not disclose dollar amounts for the window project in the public discussion; procurement and budget reporting will follow in implementation updates.

Next steps: Facilities staff will begin procurement and contracting steps for the window replacement and report back to the board; auditors Boyer and Ritter are scheduled to present audit reports in January.
