The participant said the nonprofit would host events (including a flea market and 50/50 draws) and create bylaws, a treasurer and other governance, and asked the board for permission to proceed with forming the organization so community fundraising could support school activities without using district funds.
Legal counsel and board members emphasized that a nonprofit's activity must remain separate from district finances and that the district must not conflate fundraising with official school accounting. The board agreed to review the proposal through the appropriate channels and directed staff to advise on compliance and next steps if the group formally applies for nonprofit status.
