During the consent/policy review portion of the April 22 meeting the board pulled policy 247 (extracurricular social eligibility) for separate discussion and asked administration to rewrite the language for future review.
The concern prompting the change came from a board member who described initiation practices on athletic teams that she said demean new members and asked the district to explicitly prohibit "any behavior that demeans or disrespects the full membership, privileges, acceptance and respect of its members." She moved that revised language be brought back; the motion was seconded and members debated whether those practices are legally "hazing" or fall under harassment.
One board member and staff referenced Title 18 (the criminal statutes cited for hazing definitions) and said the policy currently follows the law but that the board may expand district policy to ban additional forms of unequal treatment that do not meet the statutory definition of hazing. The board agreed to have administration and legal/PSBA templates craft proposed wording and return it for an admin review/first reading at a future working session.
The board approved the rest of the second readings of the 200-series policies that evening but separated item 247 so it could be rewritten and discussed in more depth before any final vote.
