Inspection finds safety and ADA issues at Carlynton stadium bleachers; district weighing repairs

Mr. Bader reported that stadium-seating inspectors sent civil engineer Mark Koffler to review the district's gym and stadium seating on July 3. The inspection turned up several deficiencies, he said: open fall zones where railings meet the front of the home side (the district added fencing there and plans similar fencing on the visiting side), inadequate handrails in some walkways and ADA compliance issues on both sides.
One of the larger structural concerns, Bader said, is that the walking areas between rows on the visiting side are wooden planks that "bow very a lot" while the seating structure itself is metal. He said vendors who have worked on multiple stadium projects offered a reclaimed-metal extrusion option and the district is awaiting a new-equipment price from Pioneer to compare used versus new materials. "I'm waiting for a brand new cost so we could have a comparison from a used aspect and a new aspect to see what the difference would be," he said.
Bader said district maintenance staff believe they could install replacement extrusions on the visiting side to stabilize walkways; he also offered to circulate a full copy of the inspection report to the board. The board did not take a vote on funding at the meeting and asked staff to return with cost quotes and recommendations.
