Carlynton SD safety coordinator outlines Officer Fisher’s school engagement and training

Miss Jones, Carlynton SD’s school safety and security coordinator, updated the board on the district’s school police officer program and community outreach efforts.

Miss Jones said Officer Fisher completed required state-mandated training plus district-requested modules — including professional ethics for educators, de-escalation, culturally responsive instruction, restorative practices, trauma-informed approaches and strategies for working with students with special needs. "He's at the elementary schools at least twice a day," Miss Jones said, describing regular in-school presence and routine walkthroughs with local police that identify spots for safety improvements.

She described positive-engagement activities: Officer Fisher joined students at Literacy Under the Lights, ran PBIS reward events that let winners go on "On Patrol" visits, and helped organize Fire Prevention Day with local volunteer fire departments so students could explore apparatus and learn safety procedures.

Why it matters: the presentation framed the officer’s role primarily as safety education and relationship-building rather than enforcement-only duties. The coordinator emphasized training beyond basic certification and noted that activities such as classroom visits, assemblies and community events are central to building trust and reinforcing safety norms.
