District unveils STEM/shop renovation plan to add robotics, TV studio and eSports space

Designers from Draw Collective presented detailed plans on Jan. 20 to renovate the former high-school library into a flexible STEM shop and media-production area that district leaders say will expand hands-on programming.

"We're creating flexible spaces that will be able to adapt as the district curriculum adapts and changes," Jackie Cowen of Draw Collective said during a slide-led presentation, outlining zones for a creation station (3D printing and digital art), a robotics arena, a computer lab that can double as an eSports classroom and an expanded TV/media studio.

Cowen described a cost-conscious approach that reuses existing equipment where possible and limits new finishes to paint, drywall and localized flooring and carpeting for acoustics. She said the project is expected to be under $1 million; the district plans to issue bid documents and include alternates for converting the former TV studio into a small-group construction space.

Superintendent Dr. Kreider confirmed the district set aside capital-improvement funds for the shop renovation and said a portion of the project may be financed through the forthcoming bond. Representatives and students in the meeting raised questions about asbestos and project timing; presenters said a prior renovation in 1992 reduced asbestos concern and that the schedule aims for summer construction, though exact start dates will depend on bidding and permitting.

District officials said proposals for the combined roofing/solar/bond-related projects are due Feb. 19; selected bids could be considered at a March board meeting.
