Facilities update: security camera RFP, roof and chiller work outlined

The Altoona Area School District’s facilities presenter, Trevor, gave a September 3 update on multiple capital and maintenance projects and on staffing for summer and the upcoming school year.
Trevor said the district advertised an RFP for a new security camera system following June board approval; a mandatory pre‑bid drew more than 20 contractors. He said bids would be opened on the 17th and an award is targeted for the 21st, with initial installation in non‑instructional buildings (mansion, park, warehouse, Adams Building) before moving into schools after instruction begins to avoid classroom disruption. Trevor said substantial completion is expected by the end of next summer.
On roofing, Trevor said the district anticipates recommending ARC Contract Inc. for the Pleasant Valley roof replacement; ARC’s bid was about $94,000 lower than the highest bidder, and the district will complete qualification and reference checks before recommending award at the next board meeting.
Trevor reported progress on a retaining wall project (soldier piles beginning this week, followed by block installation and backfill by JC Oil) and said the McAuliffe Heights chiller replacement is being accelerated so an operational chiller is available for spring PSSA testing. He noted the Penn Lincoln chiller is operational except for a valve replacement and reported that the junior high domestic water heater and bus garage restroom renovations are complete.
Board members asked follow‑up questions about contractor locations, square‑foot costs for roof replacement and staffing. Trevor noted a small summer supplemental crew (four people) painted many classrooms across the district and invited referrals for open positions as active hiring continues.
No vote was taken during the update; administrators said a formal recommendation for the Pleasant Valley roof will come to the board at the next meeting.
