Janet, the contracted facilitator, led the board through a 90‑minute work session to analyze the district’s board professional development plan and identify priorities for improving board culture and governance. “The goal is to help you be a high‑functioning board so that your students are successful,” she said, asking members to list top areas for growth on sticky notes and to ‘‘focus on end goal student success.’’
Board members raised concerns about overlapping priorities, meeting length and the need for clearer roles and responsibilities. One board member said the agenda has been overpacked and recommended more special meetings to allow deeper work on major items; another called for clearer expectations about when and how agenda items are added. The facilitator recommended clarifying the operating agreement and suggested revisiting the monitoring plan and data measures to ensure the board can track a small number of meaningful indicators.
The group identified recurring themes to prioritize: accountability and follow‑through, clear roles and responsibilities (governance versus management), board culture (mutual respect and communication), meeting management (agenda setting and time limits) and community engagement. Janet recommended that the board choose one or two focused goals to carry into the retreat or next school year rather than maintaining an extensive list of action items. “Less is more,” she said about structuring the plan.
Participants also discussed public comment procedures and packet distribution. Board members said they would like consistent advance sharing of public‑comment submissions so members can prepare; the facilitator noted standard practice is not to respond during public comment and suggested reviewing the district’s policy for consistency. The board signaled interest in scheduling a retreat and a June work session to refine priorities and onboarding for any new members.
The session closed with members naming recent successes — increased data sharing and school visits — and reaffirming a commitment to improving board practice. The facilitator suggested a focused roles‑and‑responsibilities review at the board retreat as a practical next step.
