Board approves Sheridan High cheer team travel to nationals; students to miss two school days

The Sheridan School District board unanimously approved out-of-state travel for the Sheridan High School cheer team to attend JAMs School Cheer Nationals in Las Vegas in January.

Coach (head coach) outlined logistics for the trip, explaining athletes would miss two school days (Thursday and Monday around the event), flights and hotel plans were being finalized, and supervision would follow a 1 adult per 5 athletes ratio. "Cost per student is about 1000 dollars," the coach said, listing airfare, registration, hotel and food as included expenses. The coach added that many athletes have already raised funds, with about $400 per athlete secured from earlier fundraisers and booster support.

Students addressed the board. "I'm Megan Whitehead. I'm an incoming senior this year," said one student, who described the opportunity to attend nationals as a major experience for her development as an athlete. Another student, Tasha Trujillo, said she was excited about the experience and the resume benefit for college applications.

Board members asked about insurance, supervision ratios, and academic eligibility. The coach said all coaches are background-checked and hold required certifications and that athletes meet district eligibility requirements. Trustees noted the trip would result in two missed school days but moved forward given the team's fundraising plan and supervision commitments.

A motion to approve out-of-state travel for the Sheridan High School cheer team nationals competition was moved by Ruby, seconded by Michael, and carried by unanimous vote.
