Sheridan SD 48J board accepts 10-year long-range facility plan, enabling grant eligibility

The Sheridan SD 48J School Board unanimously accepted the district’s 10-year long-range facility plan, a required document the superintendent said is necessary to qualify the district for state matching grants tied to a future bond.
Lisa Warner (S6), a consultant working with the district’s facilities committee, told the board the plan documents facility conditions, educational adequacy assessments and enrollment projections. "The major components of a long range facility's plan…documentation of your facility’s condition…and enrollment projections relative to your school capacity," she said.
Committee members and parents outlined top priorities: safety and security upgrades (including vestibule/sally-port changes), HVAC replacement, asbestos abatement, roof replacement, improvements to cafeteria and kitchen spaces, playground surface replacement and possible rerouting of bus drop-off points. The committee emphasized the plan is an informational, tiered 10-year roadmap rather than a bond proposal; it will inform any future bond planning and community polling.
Superintendent Dorey said submitting a current long-range facility plan to the Oregon Department of Education is a prerequisite for applying for an "Awesome" grant that matches a district’s bond amount. "You cannot receive the awesome grant without having a current long range facility plan," Dorey said, noting matching limits commonly seen in other districts (examples discussed included $4 million to $6 million matches tied to bond amounts).
The motion to accept the plan was made by Larry and seconded by Ruby; the board voted unanimously to accept the plan. Board members directed staff to prepare tier-one budget estimates and to use the plan as the foundation for bond planning and community outreach in the coming months.
Action taken: acceptance of the long-range facility plan enables the district to submit the plan to the state and positions Sheridan SD 48J to pursue matching state grants should a bond be proposed.
