County officials report asbestos found under courthouse carpet pad; abatement contractor engaged

County public works officials told the Jackson County Public Works Committee that asbestos‑containing material (ACM) was discovered under a carpet pad during a recent facility survey and that environmental consultants tested the material at 6% ACM. Brian Getty, public works, said the material appeared to be mastic left from previous tile removal; the department said the the discovery did not release fibers into the air and was addressed following federal, state and local protocols.
Getty said contractors paused work when the material was identified, environmental consultants tested and an abatement contractor, EcoSafe, was engaged with a purchase order to perform remediation. "We already have our abatement group in line. They provided the purchase order," Getty said.
Officials described the planned abatement steps for non‑friable mastic: quarantine the affected space, employ negative air systems, bag and remove material to prevent airborne release and then dispose of waste per regulatory requirements. Staff emphasized the department’s intention to avoid alarm while ensuring proper contractor response and testing. "If it becomes problematic and is going to impact people, we will let you know before we do anything," Getty said.
Next steps: EcoSafe is scheduled to perform the abatement; staff said they will notify the committee if remediation affects building operations or staff safety.
