Leaky high-school gym forces game postponement; short-term catch-basin solution installed

A water leak in the new high school gym forced the postponement of a basketball game when a drop of water on the court caused a player to slip. Board members said the student was not seriously injured and officials plan to reschedule the contest with the same scoreboard and time remaining, per OSAA guidance.

Board members described the leak as weather- and wind-dependent: wind-driven water wicks under the metal roof panels and then drips inside where the source is difficult to identify from the exterior. District staff reported that they could not find obvious exterior damage and that the problem has recurred for several years in stormy conditions.

Facilities staff identified a short-term mitigation: installing a catch basin and diversion hose that captures water as it comes through the roof and directs it away from the playing surface until a permanent repair is possible. The board said they will perform quick court checks during timeouts and dead-ball moments until the diversion is in place. The superintendent said Sean Vesper arranged the temporary solution and the district is scheduling installation around the home-game calendar.

Board members emphasized preventive maintenance for district roofs and said if a replacement or long-term repair is needed it would be scheduled through capital planning. No formal decision to fund a permanent roof replacement was made during the meeting; staff said the issue strengthens the district's bond messaging to voters about facility needs.

The board also said they will monitor the repaired area and keep the community informed about any schedule changes.
