Doris Hale, a Rainier resident and former district employee, asked whether the district still requires community service hours for graduation and said she hoped students could help local residents who need assistance.
Miss Hill (speaker 10) responded that Oregon does not require community service hours for high school graduation and the district stopped requiring those hours after the staff member who managed the program left; the district concluded continuing the requirement raised equity concerns because not all students have equal opportunities to complete community service. Hill said the board could adopt a community service requirement through formal board policy if it chose to do so.
What happens next: Board members expressed interest in exploring community service options; staff indicated they can research approaches and return with options.
