New CTE teacher showcases hands-on Intro to Business projects

Shada Carpenter, the district's new CTE instructor for Intro to Business, described a semester of hands-on projects that she said have engaged students and connected them to the community.
"I have the pleasure of teaching our intro to business class this year as a new CTE teacher," Carpenter said. She told the board students worked on Shark Tank-style pitches, researched local businesses such as Gold Beach Lumber, created rebranding and marketing projects, and completed case studies on failed businesses to analyze causes and remedies.
Carpenter said the program emphasizes practical skills, community connections and a pathway: Intro to Business in a year-long format, then Business 2 and Business 3 for students seeking a CTE credential. She described partnerships with the horticulture program, plans for merchandising projects (socks, keychains, lanyards and similar items), and community guest speakers, including a representative from Edward Jones Investments.
Board members asked about course sequencing and CTE certification; Carpenter explained that the pathway is designed so students completing three sequential courses can earn a certificate of completion. She also noted field trips and hands-on experiences are part of the curriculum, although some trips (a visit to Peter's Cranberry) had been canceled and may be rescheduled.
