During the work session the board covered governance and process items, including strategic planning, expectations for superintendent evaluation, student representation and procedures for public comment and agenda placement.
Members emphasized the need to convert strategic-plan principles into measurable annual objectives. One board member (S2) urged the group to make goals measurable: “If we want 25–26 to show improvement, we should set a measurable target,” the member said, noting the board should set objectives that can be assessed in year one of the plan. Administrators will bring data and suggested annual objectives to a strategic-planning session scheduled by the board.
On representation, staff outlined a timeline to solicit student representative applications early in the school year and to decide by September so the student could participate at the October meeting. The board debated whether the student spot should be renewable and concluded the intent is to provide opportunity to more students and recommended a single-term limit.
The board also clarified public-comment screening and decorum. The chair (S1) reminded members that most external requests belong in the public-comment period (three minutes) rather than being added to the agenda: “We don't ask questions when someone comes and brings public comment because as soon as we do that, we actually move that out of public comment and move it into the agenda,” the chair said. The board agreed to publicize the difference in the next meeting materials and to ask staff to triage requests that appear operational rather than policy matters.
Next steps: administrators and the strategic-planning consultant will return with measurable goal proposals and data; staff will finalize the student representative application process and circulate clarifying language about public-comment and agenda procedures.
