Perrydale board adopts student-drafted dress-code revisions in one reading

The Perrydale SD 21 board unanimously adopted a revised dress-code policy (JFCA) after student representatives presented proposed language.

Students Tyler McDaniel and Grace Cannon told the board they had met with staff and consulted sample policies from nearby districts when drafting the revisions. "So we're here to discuss about changing some of the dress code policies," Tyler McDaniel said during the audience introductions.

Jenny, a committee participant who read the proposed text to the board, summarized the policy by saying it is intended "to promote appropriate grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and avoid safety hazards." The reading listed allowable items (for example, hats that do not obscure the face) and enumerated non-allowable dress, including clothing that is see-through, strapless, or that exposes private parts. Jenny also said the policy requires that "certain body parts must be covered for all students at all times regardless of gender."

Board member Grace Cannon recommended adopting the revised policy and moved to approve JFCA in one reading so students could have the rules in place promptly. A colleague seconded the motion; the board voted and the motion "passes unanimously," the chair recorded.

Board members who spoke during the discussion said the proposed policy reflected productive negotiation between students, staff and the board. After the vote, students thanked trustees and left the meeting; remarks afterward included light, informal comments about following the new rules.

The revised JFCA language and the committee notes will be posted with the district materials; the board did not specify an effective date beyond the adoption vote. The board also invited the students to share the changes with their classmates.
