At a June 2 work session, Nyssa School District 26's superintendent presented a revised strategic plan that incorporates feedback from a recent board study session and proposes new, specific action steps including quarterly academic-performance reviews and staff-focused professional development.
Why it matters: The strategic plan sets school-district priorities on achievement, attendance and student supports and guides what the board will monitor and fund in coming years.
The superintendent said she moved an item to read, "provide high quality professional development based on staff needs," and added a quarterly cadence for reviewing data on math, English/language arts and behavior. She asked trustees to review the draft actions and flag missing items ahead of July, when the board will work on rolling individual goals into the plan.
She proposed a one-hour July 10 onboarding and re-boarding session for trustees (noting it would be brief because of available funds) that would cover roles and responsibilities and include practical scenarios for handling community complaints and appropriate board responses. The session would also serve to orient a newly appointed member, Nick.
Trustees suggested additional professional-development opportunities, including a poverty-simulation exercise to help board members and staff better understand the constraints families face, and discussed rescheduling canceled OSBA trainings or attending the national training in Nashville; the superintendent said she would provide comparative cost and agenda information for the board to consider.
Next steps: Staff will send the updated strategic-plan materials and conference cost comparisons to trustees for review ahead of July.
