Oakland SD 1 updates: construction progress, reunification training and enrollment rise

He reported mobilization for the softball field beginning Sept. 15, woodshop concrete and roll-up door installation scheduled soon, and plans to replace several bathroom fixtures during Christmas break under warranty work. He also noted two break-ins at the Washington facility; maintenance temporarily boarded windows and the Oakland Community Theater Group relocated costumes for safekeeping.
Safety and training: The district attended reunification training with regional partners and practiced walkthroughs with parents and volunteers. The superintendent said the district will conduct a staff-focused reunification exercise on Oct. 24 (in-service day) to rehearse roles (bus loading, reunification checkpoints) with the resource officer and law enforcement.
Enrollment and programs: The superintendent said start-of-year enrollment is higher than last year and that several grade levels are closed due to capacity; he described reallocating space to accommodate programs and hiring blended-grade teachers as needed. He also said the district will re-form a wellness committee to review local wellness policy ahead of a cafeteria audit planned for January.
