Board approves postponement of health and social studies adoptions to 2026–27
Summary
Following a Teaching & Learning report, the board voted to postpone adopting new health and social studies instructional materials until implementation in the 2026–27 school year to give staff more time to focus on ELA and mathematics work.
Nicole Duncan presented the Teaching & Learning report and recommended delaying two curriculum adoptions to allow staff more time to focus on ELA and mathematics work and to coordinate consultant support for K–2 literacy and continuing math work.
Duncan said the district "are going to request that the board, postponed 2 adoptions for curriculum" — specifically health and social studies — to ease implementation burdens on staff. A board member moved to approve the postponement of the health instructional materials for implementation in 2026–27; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. A subsequent motion to postpone the social studies instructional materials for implementation in 2026–27 was also moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Board members asked whether postponement affected funding. Miss Duncan explained the district had allocated SIA (Student Investment Act) funds across biennia for curriculum adoptions and that timing can be adjusted within that funding window; any reductions or timing changes in SIA were considered in the district’s projections.
The motions passed by voice vote and were recorded in the meeting minutes as approvals to delay the two adoptions. The Superintendent and district staff will return with implementation timelines aligned to the later adoption date.
