Superintendent presents safety and belonging survey; families and secondary students flagged lower safety perceptions

Superintendent Jen presented results from a new district safety and belonging survey, outlining who was surveyed, headline participation rates and several areas the district will target.
"We surveyed families, students grades 3 through 12, and staff," Jen said, describing the district’s five focus areas (academic achievement, safety and belonging, financial integrity, effective facilities and community connections). She told the board the family response rate was about 15 percent and that Riverview School led participation with roughly 24 percent.
Jen said elementary students reported high favorability on attendance and belonging but that school safety scored lower in some elementary-grade questions. She added that engagement and perceptions of safety tend to decline in grades 6–12. "Staff rated their sense of safety higher than families did," Jen said, and noted staff reported strong coworker support while also describing being exhausted and overwhelmed.
Board members asked whether results were comparable across schools and whether the timing—soon after high school lockdowns at one campus—affected responses; Jen said principals would dig into school-level data and that the district plans to run the survey twice a year so leaders can track change over time. The board discussed refining survey design (for example, distinguishing multiple children per household) and exploring a dynamic survey format to capture more accurate school-level response rates.
The district plans to use the findings to improve family communication about safety measures and to target interventions for student belonging and staff wellness.
