Lebanon High students honored after winning 2025 Oregon Battle of the Books state championship

Lebanon High School’s Oregon Battle of the Books team was recognized at the Lebanon Community SD 9 Board meeting after winning the 2025 state championship.
Coach Deanna Chambers Varner told the board the victory was "such success in Lebanon," and noted the program’s emphasis on curiosity, teamwork and deep reading; she thanked families, teachers and the district for their support. Varner named the student champions and invited them to speak: students described how the program rekindled their love of reading, built friendships and boosted confidence.
Student Vixen Vilbig said the competition was "really positive" and praised sportsmanship and community support. Cass Dunn described the experience as "life changing," highlighting long hours of reading, teamwork and personal growth; another student said the program helped bring new books and friends into their life.
Superintendent Meckley and board members presented a commemorative plaque and certificates and noted that the team will temporarily borrow the state trophy while the district prepares a permanent keepsake. The board thanked the coach and students for representing the district statewide and encouraged continued support for extracurricular programs that build literacy and leadership.
The recognition segment concluded with photographs and brief remarks from the principal and trustees.
