Chiliquin gym delayed by weather and archaeological holds; Bonanza gym costs and other facility projects reviewed

District construction and facilities staff updated the budget committee on multiple capital projects during the meeting, including the Chiliquin gym, the recently completed Bonanza gym and other reserve-account projects funded with ESSER and local construction reserves.
S3 (Director of Business Services) said the Chiliquin gym contract with Diversified is for about $5.999 million and that, as of May 2, the district had spent $3.2 million. Work faced weather-related delays and periodic holds for archaeological artifact monitoring, pushing occupancy targets into August. “As of May 2, we've spent 3.2 million. We have a contract with Diversified at 5,999,000,” S3 said.
The committee heard that the Bonanza gym finished with an approximate total cost of $9.1 million. S3 said the district used ESSER dollars (about $6.5 million) and committed about $2.5 million from the general fund to complete the project; the primary contractor listed was Kinsmen Construction.
S3 reviewed other projects completed or in process: roofing and flooring projects across multiple schools, Henley bleachers, security upgrades (about $165,000 districtwide), Keno parking improvements, Gilcrest dust control, tree removal for fire safety, and auditorium/locker-room projects at Henley and Chiliquin. Several projects were self-performed by district trades (electricians, plumbers, carpenters).
Lost River Community Center work (the district’s portion) is near complete; only bleachers remain to be installed and the district reported sufficient construction-account funds to cover them. The Crater Lake Learning Center acquisition and remodel totalled about $1.6 million (including a ~$264,000 mold abatement and a roof cost near $1.069M), purchased initially with SIA funds and remodeled using ESSER and construction-excise-tax money.
The Kino elementary seismic project received roughly $2.4 million in grant support from Business Oregon; S3 said the district covered a roughly $20,000 overage from the general fund for unexpected abatement costs and expects the project to be substantially complete before school starts.
What’s next: S3 said weekly construction updates and photo schedules continue for active projects and that the district is monitoring reimbursements and change orders; administrators warned the committee that some contingency exposure remains while DEQ and grant reimbursements are pending.
