Jefferson SD 14J board approves ODE Division 22 assurances despite reservations from members

The Jefferson SD 14J board considered and approved ODE Division 22 assurances, a required compliance template the district will post and confirm to the Oregon Department of Education. Board member Greg moved to accept the assurances "as presented for school year 2020 to 2021," and the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote; the chair and other members recorded aye votes.
Several trustees expressed reservations about the guidance. One board member said the Division 22 materials appear outdated on topics such as diploma requirements and said the district must have consistent, up-to-date guidance from the state. Superintendent Brad Capener explained that some sections had been relaxed during the COVID emergency (for example, kindergarten assessments and instructional hours) and that the district had followed state waivers; he said the district is now back in school and will resume required activities as appropriate.
The board approved the assurances to meet posting and reporting deadlines, and administrators said a revised graduation-requirements policy would appear in the policy packet for an upcoming meeting. No amendments to the assurances were adopted at the meeting.
