The Klamath County School District board voted to declare the Chiliquin big gym surplus after administrators said the new gym is complete and the old facility is no longer needed in regular operations.
Administration recapped a May 2023 board intent to discontinue use of the old gym when the new children's gym opened. "Now that the new Chilliquin Gym is complete and operational, the administration recommends implementing the board's prior direction of formally discontinuing use of the big gym to the district surplus process and proceeding with its sale as is," a district official said.
The record shows multiple inquiries about the property, including outreach from the Klamath Tribes (chairman Willie Ray) seeking discussions about potential cultural or programmatic uses. Board members and staff also described ideas the city has floated about infill housing near the site and a possible community rec center tied to housing development.
Board members debated the best disposition method: competitive closed bidding, open-market listing with a realtor, or a conditional transfer that would require evidence of funding capacity and a community-benefit plan. The district reminded the board that Oregon law governs public property disposal and that surplus declarations are standard practice before sale.
After discussion the board moved to declare the property surplus; the motion passed by voice vote. Staff said next steps include winterizing and securing the building, consulting the district's realtor about sale options and title issues, and returning with a recommended disposition process that could include a minimum price or a competitive bid timeline.
Next steps: staff will consult the realtor and legal counsel about title and the bid/market options and return to the board with a recommended sale process and timeline.
