The Colton SD 53 board on Oct. 13 approved Resolution 2025-8 to adjust general fund appropriations, reallocating additional beginning fund balance to pay for community communications and to add funding for grant-writing support.
Chris Gibbs, the district’s finance officer, told the board the funds would come from a stronger-than-expected beginning fund balance and that the items include half the cost of the district newspaper distribution and additional hours for grant-writing and communications. “So it's coming from additional revenue that we can pull back,” a board member said while discussing the source of the funds.
Board member Sid moved to adopt Resolution 2025-8 as included in the packet; the motion was seconded and carried on a roll-call vote. Those recorded voting in favor were Sid, Tim and the Chair.
Gibbs described the district’s broader fiscal picture during the same discussion: a revised state school fund estimate that trims revenue by roughly $25,000 relative to spring projections, steady headcount in the mid–upper 500s, some expenditure pressures (middle-school staffing, special-education transportation), and a near-$1 million fund balance that allows limited targeted spending this year.
The board did not identify additional ongoing obligations tied to the resolution; staff said the expenditures are intended to be one-time uses of available balance and to support communications and grant-seeking capacity.
The district will publish details of the resolution in its standard minutes and move forward with hiring or assigning hours for grant-writing and communications as described.
