Colton SD 53 board adopts updated policies, including new concussion language

The Colton SD 53 board on Oct. 13 adopted a set of updated policies that include newly required language about concussion protocols and related student supports.
School leadership presented the packet as largely technical updates required by the state and federal guidance. “The state required us last year to adopt some more language around the concussion part process,” a district official said during the discussion, noting the updates will align district policy with sport-governing guidance.
Board member Tim moved to approve action item 12 (policies 1–6) for first reading and adoption; the motion was seconded and carried on a roll-call vote. The three members present voted in the affirmative: Sid (aye), Tim (aye) and the Chair (aye).
Board members said the policy updates were intended to lock district practice in step with the Oregon School Activities Association’s (OSAA) concussion protocols while also addressing academic supports after a concussion.
“We want our programs to be in alignment,” a board member said during discussion, adding that embedding the academic side of post-concussion care in district policy fills a prior gap when OSAA’s guidance focused only on athletics.
The adopted policy updates will be incorporated into the district policy manual as presented. The board did not propose amendments to the packet during the meeting.
The next procedural step is administrative implementation: district staff will apply the policy language across athletics and academic programs and communicate requirements to coaches, staff and families.
