Colton SD 53 board approves consent agenda; students and PTA report fundraisers and events

The Colton School District 53 Board of Directors met Nov. 10 and approved the consent agenda, which included the Oct. 13 meeting minutes and personnel hires, before hearing a sequence of school and community reports.
Student liaisons from the elementary school reported recent fundraising and service activities. A student liaison said, “We raised a total of 604,” describing a jogathon that met its goal; school incentives for top fundraisers included a visit to the Colleton Cafe and themed dress-up days for staff. The liaison also announced an annual canned-food drive with a schoolwide goal of 1,750 items and collection through Nov. 20. The PTA representative thanked volunteers for the fall festival, promoted a merchandise sale running through Dec. 10 (PTA receives a portion), and announced a can drive Nov. 30 and a “Santa’s Supper” fundraiser on Dec. 11.
Middle-school liaisons summarized end-of-quarter activities: girls' basketball and wrestling seasons are underway (14 basketball players, nine wrestlers), an honor-roll trip to an arcade/pinball venue, and a field trip to Oregon State University where students tested wind-turbine models. Board members asked about how fundraising goals are set and whether student funds are being allocated to identified needs; a student liaison said some funds will be used for music-room needs and a projector replacement.
The chair called the consent agenda for a roll-call vote after a motion to approve was made and seconded. The motion passed with the majority of board members voting in favor and one abstention. The chair then moved to community reports and district business.
The board praised staff and coaches during board reports and announced a memorial for longtime district employee Frank Kniester scheduled for Nov. 15 at the middle school. The meeting later proceeded to other district business and an executive session on the superintendent's evaluation.
The board is expected to follow up on student-account reconciliations and PTA event logistics at upcoming meetings.
