Elementary and middle-school liaisons report fundraisers, clubs and field trips; PTA outlines holiday activities

Elementary and middle-school student liaisons gave brief reports at the Nov. 10 Colton School Board meeting on student activities, fundraisers and events.

Elementary student liaison Lennon (S4) said the elementary jogathon raised 604 (students announced the tally) and described rewards: teachers will dress up Hawaiian-style for a week and students who met fundraising goals attended a special lunch. Lennon said the student council helped at the fall festival, ran fundraisers including a 50/50 raffle, and announced a schoolwide canned food drive running through Nov. 20 with a goal of 1,750 nonperishable items. Lennon said the council plans a special surprise for the school if the canned-food goal is met and mentioned a blue-out dress-up day for diabetes awareness.

Middle-school liaisons (S7 and a student speaker) reported fall activities: the end of first quarter on Oct. 30, girls' basketball (14 players) and wrestling (9 wrestlers), a student council-organized dance with games and a movie, honor-roll recognitions, and a field trip to Oregon State University where students designed and tested wind turbines.

PTA representative (S8) thanked volunteers for a successful fall festival, promoted a merchandise sale running through Dec. 10 (20% off, portion to PTA), and announced a can drive at the Colton Garage on Nov. 30 (11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) and Santa's Supper on Dec. 11 (5:30–7:30 p.m.). The PTA asked for volunteers and provided contact information via social channels and the TeamReach app.

Board members praised students and volunteers and asked practical questions about fundraising goals and planned spending; elementary students said funds will support music programs and replace items such as a projector.
