High school wildland firefighter class yields certification and summer hire

Brookings-Harbor School District heard a presentation celebrating a new vocational opportunity when Coos Forest Patrol fire warden Jesse Roscoe described a semester-length wildland firefighter class taught at the high school.
Roscoe said the course covers classroom and field work required for national Type 2 wildland firefighter certification, including key modules and ICS training, and that students practiced hose lays, hand-line digging and deploying practice fire shelters during multi-day field trips. He said the district hopes the program will provide local hires for regional fire agencies.
Student Kylie Bursette, who completed the class, told the board she learned hands-on skills such as rolling hose and constructing hand lines and that she plans to work for the agency this summer. Roscoe said roughly a dozen students can be certified from the course and that the program complements one-week recruit trainings used elsewhere.
The board praised the partnership and discussed expanding vocational offerings and replicating the model for other career-technical programs. No formal action was taken; administrators said they will continue the partnership and consider scheduling and staffing for next year.
