Brookings-Harbor board approves consent agenda, backs Janet Holland for OSBA committee and hears ODE accountability update

During district reports, a district official (identified in the meeting by the first name Catherine) told the board the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) had removed the district from the federal "improvement" list, a status the district had held since roughly 2022. Catherine said the district will be "held harmless" for the current year and that promised professional development funds will be available for this school year.
Catherine also described new ODE accountability groupings that will compare the district to similar districts over time, and she cautioned that the district may face closer oversight if growth targets are not met. "I would not call this local control by any stretch of imagination," Catherine said, expressing concern that some grant requirements are tightly prescriptive and could require outside providers.
Board members discussed a literacy grant whose total was described in meeting remarks as a three-year package (participants discussed figures summing to approximately $750,000, with irregular year-by-year disbursements described in the meeting). The board said it had postponed an action to appropriate funds because the district does not yet know the final available amounts from ODE.
The board also shared procedural notes: a planned building presentation and citizen input were postponed, members encouraged attendance at school events and athletic contests, and the next board meeting was scheduled for Dec. 17.
