Ocean Crest staff describe 'support space' for student behavior and restorative work

At the Feb. 28 meeting of the Bandon School District 54 Board of Directors, behavior specialist Juliana Boke described the school'based "support space" at Ocean Crest, saying students themselves helped rename it to reflect a broader set of services.
"So we came up with the support space that was, I think, the most well rounded name for this room and this space," Boke said, summarizing changes to a room formerly called the Reset Station.
Boke told trustees the room is arranged to be "open" and multiuse, with comfortable seating, workspaces and tools staff use to support students who need brief breaks, focused work time or restorative conferencing. Staff use a slip system to tell classroom teachers why a pupil came to the room and to share a brief snapshot of what transpired when the student returns.
The support space contains sensory and movement options Boke said help students regulate before reentering instruction: a mood meter, fidgets and a walking pad for short activity breaks. She also described a weighted-blanket crash pad and quiet materials for students who are tired or dysregulated.
Boke said the district shifted staffing this year so the room is run by two adults, including a certified teacher, enabling more consistent communication with families and more in-class support. She said the student support specialist (identified in the meeting as Amelia Robbins) manages data entry, restorative conferencing and supports students returning to class after behavior incidents.
"We have students who come in and eat lunch," Boke said, recounting the variety of uses for the space and the district's approach to tiered supports. She praised restorative conferences and character-education groups as ways to teach students social-emotional skills.
Board members asked about the program's history and whether similar roles exist at higher grade levels. Administrators said Ocean Crest has operated a support room for approximately eight years and this is the first year it has been run by a certified teacher, a change district leaders said has reduced the principal'level caseload and increased family contact.
Trustees thanked the presenters and moved on to other business. The administration said it will continue developing goals aligned with districtwide priorities.
