Banks School Board approves on-campus golf practice facility plan

David (speaker 5), who presented the proposal, said the project is included in the district master plan and that an initial donor contribution of $250,000 makes construction feasible. He described a secured, fenced facility that would include a 90-by-30-foot structure with a 50-by-30-foot putting green, a covered 12-foot hitting area with roughly 15 practice mats, netting to contain errant shots and separate parking (approximately 73 spaces) pushed back from the field.
"The idea came about about five years ago," David said, adding that the plan has been vetted by the long-range facilities planning team and by 5 Star, the preliminary site-plan designer. He said the facility would be secured with limited key access for staff and coaches and would be designed to meet fire-department access requirements.
Board members asked about supervision, public access and cost. David said the facility can be delivered with the donated funds at a basic level but could be substantially upgraded if additional fundraising reaches higher targets; he referenced scenarios up to around $1,000,000 for a more finished project while stressing the $250,000 donation is sufficient to proceed with a functional facility.
A motion to approve the golf practice facility capital improvement plan was made by Speaker 3 and seconded by Speaker 9. When Chair (speaker 2) called for a vote, members present voiced their approval and the chair declared the motion approved.
The board discussion included plans to solicit corporate partners and local foundations to close any funding gap and to publicize the facility once built. The superintendent and presenters said the design aims to avoid removing parking needed for other athletics uses and to ensure safe access and secure storage of equipment.
Next steps identified in the meeting include final site adjustments with the project designer, coordination on parking and access, and outreach to potential matching funders. The board did not specify an exact construction start date during the meeting.
