Bandon board appoints Troy Russell and Brian Cassidy to fill two open seats

The Bandon School District board on Feb. 26 appointed Troy Russell and Brian Cassidy to fill two vacant board seats after brief in-person interviews and voice votes.
The board heard short statements from seven candidates. Brian Cassidy told the board he has more than 20 years of accounting experience and has served on local nonprofit boards; "My goal is just to give back to the community and try to make the school districts an education for the kids as best as it can be," Cassidy said. Troy Russell, a long-time local resident and former board member, said he returned because "you need somebody with some experience" to help steady the district.
Board members followed the application interviews with nominations and voice votes. Russell was confirmed for position 7; Cassidy was later confirmed for position 3. Several board members urged unsuccessful applicants to consider joining the budget committee, which the board said provides an on-ramp to district governance.
The appointments fill vacancies ahead of upcoming budget discussions and curriculum review sessions the board has scheduled this spring. Newly appointed members will be seated immediately and will participate in regular board duties, the board chair said at the meeting.
The board did not publish individual roll-call tallies in the meeting minutes for the voice votes.
