Springfield Local board honors retirees, approves budget transfers, personnel hires and overnight trips

The Springfield Local Schools Board of Education opened its June meeting by recognizing roughly 24–25 district retirees and then approved a package of routine business matters, including budget transfers, personnel actions, student overnight trips and a booster donation.

Presenter (speaker 2) read the names and service histories of the retirees — spanning positions from classroom teachers and administrators to custodial and cafeteria staff — and invited those present to the front for recognition. "If you're here, please come up front because we have something special that Vanna White is going to hand out to you," the presenter said while calling out service years and buildings for each retiree. Chair and other board members offered brief remarks thanking the retirees for long service.

After the recognition, the board approved its May 20, 2025 minutes and authorized routine financial actions including payment of monthly bills and acceptance of the treasurer's financial reports for May 2025. The board also approved transfers from the general fund to specific accounts, including $234,000 to the bus-garage building bond retirement account, approximately $995,000 to the sinking-fund bond retirement, and $150,000 to cafeteria food service.

On personnel, the board approved a broad personnel package (Item 10) that included resignations (for example, a varsity football assistant coach effective June 8, 2025), the hiring of a Spring Hill elementary principal on a two-year administrative contract pending licensure, multiple teacher hires for the 2025–26 school year, tenure approval for Monica Rusick, classified reassignments, substitutes, extended-school-year appointments, building leadership-team assignments, athletic and non-sports supplemental contracts, extended-time counselor days, and an unpaid leave request for a classified employee. The board moved and approved the personnel slate as presented.

Staff introduced several new hires who were in attendance, including music and classroom teachers and new head boys basketball coach Kevin Nash. Nash was introduced as a math teacher with years of coaching experience; he said he was "excited to be a part of the Springfield community in schools." The incoming Spring Hill principal also spoke briefly, thanking the community.

Food-service staff reported that Provision 2 — the districtwide free breakfast and lunch provision used this year — led to roughly 14,000 more meals served than the prior year, increasing participation and access. Staff said higher food and supply costs, replacement of an oven, the end-of-life replacement of point-of-sale software, and administrative-review costs contributed to increased food-service expenses; at the high school alone, staff estimated nearly $50,000 in additional food costs this year. Staff said they will monitor state reimbursement decisions to determine whether Provision 2 can continue next year and emphasized outreach to ensure families complete required applications.

The board approved final amended appropriations for fiscal year 2025 and adopted a temporary appropriations resolution for fiscal year 2026. It also approved overnight student trips — marching band camp to Camp Muskingum (July 27–Aug. 2, 2025) and a cheerleading camp at Walsh University (June 27–29, 2025) — noting that participant fees and fundraising will cover expenses. The board accepted a $5,497 donation from the All Sports Boosters Club for the Springfield baseball team.

The treasurer reported the five-year forecast was approved and said the district should land near its estimated year-end targets; final year-end figures are expected next month. Central office staff announced that transportation supervisor Melinda Hamilton received the Ohio Association for Pupil Transportation "everyday hero" award and summarized takeaways from the Ohio School Safety Summit on threat assessment and student mental-health coordination with law enforcement.

Before adjourning into executive session, Chair noted upcoming calendar items: district buildings closed June 19 for Juneteenth, a special board meeting/work session on June 30 at 6 p.m., and the next regular meeting on July 15 at 6 p.m. The board voted to enter executive session to prepare for or review negotiations and bargaining sessions with employees; no business was anticipated upon return.

The meeting covered routine governance matters and community recognition; no final policy changes or contentious disputes were recorded on the public record during this session.
