Board honors retiring teacher Thomas Fleming and approves personnel hires, stipend

Fleming, who retired effective June 1, 2025 after 32 years with the district, addressed the board and visitors, saying he was grateful for "thousands of kids that graced my classroom" and thanking colleagues and his wife. The board presented Fleming with a commemorative bell and said it would mail the item to him.
The board approved personnel items grouped under agenda item 11, including acceptance of classified resignations (Nancy Kennedy effective Sept. 1, 2025; Paul Ward effective Aug. 4, 2025; Ashley Purdie effective for the 2025–26 school year), hires and reassignments pending licensure and screening, and a two‑year administrative contract for Stacy Manzo as Springfield Junior High associate principal.
The board also approved employment of teachers and classified substitutes (examples listed in the agenda: Brooke Esterly as an intervention specialist and Gina Carney and Tricia Evans as substitutes) and reassignments for several staff members. As part of the personnel motion the board approved a $5,000 summer athletic director stipend for Kevin Vaughn to compensate summer work.
Board members moved and seconded the personnel motion and voted to approve the items as presented. The meeting packet lists exhibits and supporting documents for the personnel recommendations.
The board said these personnel actions are effective per the dates in the agenda and are contingent on required licensure and preemployment screenings where noted. The district did not provide additional public detail about individual contract terms beyond the agenda items.
