TPS and community members in Toledo present car to Darren after years of hardship

Organizers said the effort began when an organizer’s brother, DJ, reached out to Dr. Durant and, with help from TPS, arranged the donation. “With the help of TPS, we put this together and figured out how to get a car for him,” Organizer (S4) said.
Mentor (S2), who described working with Darren during a period of eviction and family rehabilitation, summarized Darren’s path to the event: “We got an eviction notice … Mom’s in rehab and I need help,” Mentor said, recounting what Darren had told staff and volunteers. Mentor credited Darren’s persistence: he attended school during the summer and graduated.
Darren (S3) reacted to the surprise event with visible emotion. “I don’t even—I’m at a loss for words,” he said. He added the car “is gonna help me a lot. You know, I can just go when I have to instead of having to worry about this, that, or somebody coming to get me or paying a lot of money for a Uber or something.”
TPS representative (S5) urged others in similar situations to reach out for help, saying, “We have great people within TPS. We have great people in city of Toledo. All these individuals are looking for opportunities to support individuals who need support.”
Organizers framed the donation as a community response to barriers faced by young people experiencing housing instability and substance-use challenges. No formal city action, vote or funding allocation was announced at the event; presenters described this as a locally coordinated charitable effort. The gathering closed with Darren saying, “We are TPS proud.”
