Northwest Local board approves tutor, coach and substitute-teacher recommendations for 2024–25

The Northwest Local Board of Education met July 22 and approved multiple personnel and policy recommendations for the 2024–25 school year, including the rehire of tutors, supplemental coaching contracts and continued educational requirements for substitute teachers.
The board chair called the meeting to order and the presenter recommended approval of "unlimited tutor contracts for the 24–25 school year," naming at least one tutor, Alicia Everly, and stating most tutors are returning. The presenter said the hires and contracts are contingent on background checks and certification where required.
The presenter also asked the board to accept the resignation of a veteran assistant first-grade teacher at West Primary, effective May 31, 2024; a motion to accept the resignation was moved and seconded and carried in roll call.
On substitute-teacher requirements, district staff told the board they will continue the district’s existing approach for 2024–25 that allows community members without teaching licenses to serve as substitutes after criminal background checks and other screening. The presenter said most substitutes are licensed teachers but acknowledged there can be shortages, noting: "It dropped off right around February, March when it gets cold and more people start getting sick." The presenter estimated substitute use on busy days as "anywhere from 5 to 15."
The board also reviewed a long list of supplemental coaching contracts for 2024–25, which the presenter described as "many" returning coaches and said that awards are contingent on criminal-record checks, certification and the number of student athletes. Motions to approve the presented tutors, paraprofessional/cafeteria hires, supplemental contracts and substitute-teacher requirements were moved, seconded and approved in roll call.
During recognition of visitors, the chair noted an announcement that Coventry will join the PAC for the 2025–26 school year; a presenter said that change should reduce travel burdens for local teams and spectators.
The meeting concluded after routine roll-call approvals and the board adjourned.
