Northwest Local discusses arts addition, schedules strategic-planning workshop

District staff described a planned arts addition and athletics upgrades with a tentative Feb. 3 groundbreaking, and asked the board for a strategic-planning work session after the Feb. 23 meeting to review draft mission and vision statements and a March survey.
A staff member told the Northwest Local Board of Education on Jan. 14 that the district plans an arts addition and improvements to athletic spaces, with a tentative groundbreaking set for Feb. 3.
"We are very excited for our arts addition, the weight room, and the rest of the room to finally be able to talk about this," the staff member said, noting that the district will revisit costs for an annex that have risen and will remove some items to lower the price. The staff member said meetings with turf companies are planned for mid-May and that additional changes to scope may follow as the project proceeds.
The staff member also presented a draft mission and vision developed with teachers, administrators and other stakeholders and requested a work session after the regular Feb. 23 board meeting. The facilitator, Ms. Sandell, will lead the kickoff and the district plans a community survey in March to gather broader input. The staff member said draft goals would likely be shared with the board in April or May in preparation for the coming school year.
Board members thanked staff and contractors who attended to answer questions. The board did not record a final vote on the construction amendment during the discussion; members asked staff to continue refining costs and scope before returning with updates.
